Smoking During Pregnancy cause autism

Women who are smoking during pregnancy tend to give birth to babies who suffer from one type of autism that is Asperger's disorder.

"Autism is a general term for several types of disorders that damage the social and communication skills," said Amy Kalkbrenner, assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health and lead researcher.

"What we see is some disorder on the autism spectrum may be influenced by factors such as a mother smoked during pregnancy."

Figures mothers who smoke during pregnancy are still high in the United States even though many know that this may impact harmful to the baby. Kalkbrenner was found that 13 % of mothers whose children were included in the study of smoking during pregnancy.

In a study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, Kalkbrenner and his colleagues compared data from birth certificates of thousands of children from 11 states with a database of children diagnosed with autism are owned by the CDC's Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network (ADDMN).

The result, of the 633 989 children born in 1992, 1994, 1996 and 1998, 3315 of which were identified as having autism spectrum disorder at age 8 years.

"This study does not say for sure that smoking is a risk factor for autism," Kalkbrenner said as quoted by LiveScience, Monday (04/30/2012). "But this study suggest an association between smoking and certain types of autism".Regard also needs further study, he added.

"The CDC itself has just released data indicating that 1 in 88 children suffering from autism spectrum disorders," he said.

Because autism involves a wide spectrum of conditions and genetic interactions with the environment is so complex, there is no study that could explain all the causes of autism, he added. "But the main purpose of this study is to help find one answer."
